Wiring diagram and instructions for a 3 way & 4 way switching system.
I replaced all of my outlets and switches from tan to white. In my upstairs hallway, at the top of the stairs is a switch that turns on/off the hall light, at the end of the hall is another switch that turns on/off the hall light. These both work correctly. In the middle is another switch that is suppose to work independently and not affect the two end switches. I was told that I needed to put a 4-way switch in the middle. It works but it seems to mess up the two end switches. I know when I replaced the tan with white that I was very careful to make sure I replaced wires exactly the same way. If the middle switch is up, the two end switches don''t work. It is crazy and very frustrating. PLEASE HELP.
You do need a FOUR WAY SWITCH if you have three switches in the system. Here is a 4-WAY WIRING DIAGRAM from Lutron should you decide to install a DIMMER CONTROL.
