Mounting outdoor 12 volt transformers inside the house.
The manual for my 600W transformer suggests outdoor installation; however I would really prefer to install it indoors and avoid the unsightly appearance of the black box hanging on the side of my house. Can they be installed indoors? Is it simply because the power pack is not UL listed and the mfg. is simply being extra cautious about the risk of fire?
You are right about the UL listing for your OUTDOOR TRANSFORMER. All transformers generate heat by design and the landscape transformers are generally cooled by the outside air. Transformers rated for indoor use have a 3" air space requirement to allow for air circulation and heat dissipation.
If you want to locate your 12 volt transformer in the garage to keep the front of your house clean, go ahead. As long as you have a GFCI RECEPTACLE and lots of room for the transformer to breath, you will be fine!
